Campus Safety officials blocked drive ways into school parking lots on Dec. 1 because the campus was closed due to a power outage from the wind.

The Santa Ana winds that put some cities into a state of emergency on Dec. 1 also caused a halt to normal campus activities due to a power outage throughout campus.

Priority registration for students with disabilities, EOP&S, veterans, athletes, and honors students were not able to register due to the servers being down.

According to Lois Papner, dean of admissions, there was no setback to those students and they were able to register the following day.

"I have not heard of one student who was not able to get the classes they need," Papner said regarding priority registration.

The Associated Students of Citrus College's last day of elections was also scheduled for Dec. 1, but was postponed to Dec. 6.

Alerts were sent out the morning of Dec. 1 to students, faculty and staff that are registered with Citrus Alert, informing them the campus was closed.

Students who are not registered with Citrus Alert arrived to campus to find it deserted.

Gerardo Lopez of El Monte was one of those students.

"I came here to work on my essay because the power is out at my house," Lopez, 19, said.

He saw no cars, but read the signs put up by Campus Safety announcing the school was closed and to call the main office if they had any questions.

The maintenance staff worked to clear fallen branches and leaves strewn around campus. Part of a pine tree fell on the Liberal Arts/Business Building and workers were busy sawing it into smaller pieces.

"There was some minor damage to some of the rooftop fans and damage to some of the trees, but nothing serious," said Paula Green, director of communications. "The maintenance and facilities staff have been engaged in cleanup efforts from the start and they continue to do so."

On Dec. 2, another alert was sent out, informing subscribers that "electrical power has been restored, all scheduled classes will be taught, and all business offices will be open."

To register for Citrus Alert and receive the program's phone calls, emails or text messages in the event of an emergency, log-on to Wingspan and go into the personal tab to update your emergency contact information.
