In a battle of first-place football teams, Citrus College (3-3) (3-0) lost to College of the Canyons (6-0) (3-0) on Oct. 15 at their inaugural game in the newly renovated Citrus Stadium. The final score was 51 to 35.
The matchup was a conference game, but since Canyons is in the Northern Division and Citrus is in the Southern Division, it has no effect on the Owls' current ranking.
Citrus took charge early when wide receiver Grady Thomas scored off a spectacular fake field goal with 8:52 left in the first.
The Owls' defense also set an aggressive tone by stopping the Cougars from scoring on third and fourth downs at the one-yard line.
Citrus defensive back Joshua Broughton also intercepted a lateral pass thrown by Canyons quarterback Marcel Marquez.
However, the Owls began to slow, and the Canyon Cougars took full advantage with Marquez throwing two touchdown passes to wide receivers Elliot Jones and Shane Morales.
Cougar Jonathan Johnson kicked a field goal and running back Brian Stewart also scored for COC. At the half, the score was 24-14 Cougars.
In the second half, the Cougars scored first, with Marquez running for a four-yard touchdown and Stuart running one yard for a score with 6:11 left in the third.
However, Citrus linebacker Toa Alo blocked the extra point.
The Owls responded, with quarterback Bryan Waggerner throwing a 21-yard pass to Thomas with 31 seconds to go in the third.
In the fourth with 9:28 left in the game, Canyons running back Brandon Clayton scored with a 21-yard run.
Then Citrus QB Waggerner found wide receiver Charles Lewis in the end zone for the last score of the game. But an unsuccessful onside kick and an interception thrown by Waggerner sealed the deal for the Cougars.
Citrus had 262 passing yards and 163 yards on the ground for total of 425 yards of offense.
"I wasn't too happy with our performance, to be honest," said Canyons head coach Chuck Lyons after the game. "We made too many mistakes on defense and special teams, and I wasn't too impressed with College of the Canyons today."
