It was a night of exhilarating music.
The Citrus College's Blue Note Swing Orchestra led by Robert Slack and the Azusa Pacific University Jazz Ensemble directed by David Beatty put on an entertaining performance.
On April 12 in the Haugh Performing Arts Center. The Blue Note Swing Orchestra has 23 musicians and the APU Jazz Ensemble has 20 musicians.
The Battle of the Big Bands is not just a competition; it is a joint concert.
The real battle took place at the conclusion of the event. In"Finale: The Drum Battle," APU drummer Bryan Taylor and Citrus College drummer Anthony Logerfo went head-to-head in a magnificent display of their drumming skills.
Logerfo started the battle by performing an insane rhythm attack on the drum set. Taylor followed with remarkable technique and rapid fire speed.
The competition ended in a tie. Then both drummers joined forces to finish with the classic Big Band song "Sing, Sing, Sing." The crowd responded with a standing ovation.
The event also featured the use of visuals on two numbers: " Dick Tracy" and "Hunting Wabbit." The Blue Note Swing Orchestra performed "Dick Tracy," a wonderful adaptation to the film's score. The APU Jazz Ensemble added depth to the arrangements by Gordon Goodwin for "Hunting Wabbit." The reel and the music were glued together in perfect unison, capturing the animated characters' moods and actions.
Special guest Saxophonist Rusty Higgins performed" Rose Room," originally composed by great jazz clarinetist Artie Shaw. Higgins solos moved smoothly through the entire arrangement adding intensity and finesse.
"The Peanut Vendor" stole the show, demonstrating Latin soul music at its best. The blend of different genres such as Bossa Nova, Salsa, Latin Jazz, and small dose of Tropicalia projected life and fire, enchanting anyone to dance.
The event was a great second experience for those who attended last year's event and an amazing one for first timers.
The second Annual Battle of the Big Bands was a big success.
