Hopefully you were wearing green on March 17. If not, you might have gotten yourself a friendly pinch from the leprechaun roaming around campus and passing out St. Patrick's Day celebration flyers.
Vipavanh Sokanthong, 20, a fashion design major and a food server at Citrus College, was decked out in the full leprechaun get-up: the green pants, white socks, fake orange beard and sideburns, and buckled black shoes.
"Nobody else in the past has wanted to dress up like a leprechaun," Sokanthong said. "So I decided I would be the first one."
Sokanthong was promoting the annual St. Patrick's Day celebration held in the cafeteria and sponsored by the Owl Café, and put on by the Owl Café and the Associated Students of Citrus College.
'Tis the seventh year for the celebration. The Owl Café's very own Philomena O'Shea, food services supervisor at Citrus College, introduced the festivity when she was hired in 1998.
The event featured traditional Irish food, entertainment, and games.
As in years past, O'Shea prepared a wide variety of Irish dishes for the event. They included corned beef and cabbage, traditional Irish stew, and Irish meat pies.
Also, according to the student services office, 546 pieces of cake were handed out free of charge to the attending patrons.
As for the entertainment, Paddy Doyle's Boots, an Irish folk band headed by Jim Cope, Citrus College's recently retired environmental health and safety programs coordinator, performed once at 11:00 a.m. and again at 1 p.m. to finish the affair.
The quartet, comprised of Cope, Danny Oberbeck, Lief Frederick, and Smokey Stover describe themselves as a cross between the Clancy Brothers and Flogging Molly. They brought traditional Irish folk music into the celebration.
"Playing at Citrus is always one of the most fun gigs," said Cope, whose band has now played the St. Patrick's celebration for four years straight. "We get to be outside and play for people of all ages, from pre-schoolers to retired people. We really enjoy it a lot."
Also providing entertainment for the event were Irish step dancers from Larson Dance Academy, which has studios in Glendora and Fullerton.
The step dancers, who range in age from 5 to 14, provided a brief summary of each dance before performing it.
A game was also held in which a leprechaun's pot o' gold was hidden somewhere on campus, and the lucky person that found it won three free lunches courtesy of the Owl Café.
It was found on the cafeteria patio area, according to Adrienne Thompson, student activities coordinator at Citrus College.
Overall, with the high attendance and the way the staff came together to plan it, the celebration was a success.
"I really appreciate what the facilities department did in helping us set everything up," said Thompson. "And both the cafeteria staff and the Student Affairs Office really helped out a lot. They were great."
