Now in its silver anniversary year, National Women's History Month is honoring the theme "Women Change America.
The theme honors and recognizes women from all over the country who have influenced the culture in which we live.
Hosted by the National Women's History Project, a nonprofit organization, women's history month was started in 1980 by a group of women who noticed that only three percent of content in textbooks was devoted to women.
They convinced Congress and the White House to recognize the importance of women in history.
Their efforts led to the week of March 8th being designated as National Women's History Week and later in 1987 to a successful campaign to declare the entire month of March as National Women's History Month.
The NWHP "honors women of diverse cultural, ethnic, occupational, racial, class and regional backgrounds, by trying to promote a multicultural women's history perspective."
Women from all over the country have been honored, from astronaut Sally Ride, the first American woman in space in 1983, to playwright and screenwriter Lillian Hellman, who wrote The Children's Hour in 1934.
Women deserve the same respect as men. They have come a long way from the time when they couldn't vote, couldn't wear pants, and couldn't pursue a career outside the home.
NWHP is a powerful organization that has made a huge impact in the last 25 years.
"We are retelling history. And changing the future. We believe that knowing women's history gives all of us-female and male-the power and inspiration to succeed. We believe that Our History Is Our Strength," is National Women's History Project motto.
