CDC Children, Teachers Subject of Film

Aaron Castrejon

Issue date: 3/9/05 Section: Life
It was a regular week in the Orfalea Family Children's Center at Citrus College.
As usual, the children were running, playing, joyfully yelling and occasionally getting into mischief.
The teachers were watching the children, making sure their playing wasn't too rough, keeping the noise down and steering their charges out of mischief.
What was unusual was that all the while cameras were rolling and recording footage of the teachers interacting with infants and toddlers.
The three-day long film project at Citrus sponsored by Sonoma State University is part of a program that will produce instructional videotapes titled "Desired Results for Children and Families, Training and Technical Assistance Project."
"I felt very honored to have them come and film our staff," said Barbara Newby, child development specialist. "We have such an experienced staff, and our program is one of only five demonstration programs for the state."
The demonstration Program for Infant/Toddler Caregivers (PITC) serves five California community colleges. The program provides opportunities for youngsters to learn in various environments and lets childcare students observe examples of quality infant/toddler care.
Personnel at the Child Development Division, in the California Department of Education recommended the Citrus College infant/toddler facility to Sonoma State. Citrus College fit the criteria perfectly according to Irene Barnett, training specialist from the California Institute on Human Services at Sonoma.
"I was extremely impressed with the Citrus College Child Development Center," noted Barnett.
"Barbara Newby and the infant/toddler staff demonstrated excellent knowledge and practice in observing young children in their daily activities."
"The facility is a beautiful model for infant/toddler care, and the staff and children displayed tremendous flexibility in adjusting to the addition of cameras and strangers."
Three crewmembers filmed the CDC for three days -Jan. 26, 27, 28.
