HEPCAT - Out of Nowhere
Out Of Nowhere by Hepcat originally came out in '93. Hellcat records reissued this difficult to find CD in '04, which is sure to please new and old fans of the Ska-Reggae- rocksteady-jazz group. This music lover's classic is sure to increase the fan base of the cool fellows from Los Angeles.
Hepcat consists of Gregg Lee #6 and Alex Dessert #7 doing lead vocals; Deston Berry on piano/vocals; Raul Talavera on alto sax; David Hillyard on tenor sax; David Fuentes on bass; Dennis Wilson on guitar; and Greg Narvas on drums.
Ska first surfaced in the late '60s. Its pure spirit was imported from Kingston, Jamaica, through New Orleans and Memphis to transistor radios, to everywhere.
To name a few Ska greats: The Melodians, The Skatalites, The Maytals, and The Ethiopians. Hepcat is heavily influenced by these legends. The band gets back to old ways with a'50's vibe blending with an R&B feeling.
The song "All For You" has phrases like "shoo-wop" which give it a jitterbug type sound with blues meshed in. The sax work done by Hillyard and Fuentes is a joyfully candy-coated feeling. The vocals by Lee #6 are amazing; he portrays a man expressing his love to his girlfriend perfectly: "It's all for the love, love, it's all for my darling Christine."
Another great track on the album is "Dance Wid Me." It has a happy, positive, no worries, bubblegum, puppy love sound. The mainly premise of the song is about dancing and is intended to cause a fun experience.
Yes, Out Of Nowhere by Hepcat is 12 years old, but it is a guaranteed gratifying album. The way the band mixes about six different genres is out of this world.
Hepcat will be playing the House Of Blues in Hollywood on April 22. Tickets are on sale now and information can be reached at ticketmaster.com and are $18. -Sergio Lopez
BENZINO - Arch Nemesis
After finding little to no success and being dropped from his label just four months after the release of Redemption (2002), Boston rapper/producer Benzino has managed to bounce back with his most recent album, Arch Nemesis.
