A dedicated sports announcer has added a new technological dimension to Citrus sports: online broadcasting.
Alex Vasquez, 23, is known as "The Voice" of the Owl sports teams.
He has developed a broadcasting system for the athletic department for Citrus College away games.
"I proposed the idea to the athletic department, and they went for it," Vasquez said.  "I brought my own equipment, but I did have to go through a lot of hoops to make it work."
Vasquez graduated from  Charter Oak High School, then attended Citrus College from fall 1999 through spring 2002.
He played basketball for two years at Citrus, and was a reporter on the Clarion newspaper.
After graduating from Citrus, he received a partial scholarship to attend CSU Dominguez Hills. The program there did not match what he wanted, so he transferred to the University of La Verne.
"I learned a lot from taking the journalism classes at Citrus," Vasquez said. "The knowledge I learned here helped me be prepared for La Verne."
Vasquez is majoring in radio/television broadcasting at ULV.
"It's funny because sometimes the knowledge I gain at work puts me ahead in school," Vasquez said.
Vasquez is also part of the radio station at La Verne, 107.9 KULV.
"It's a great experience to be on radio," he said.
Vasquez  also works for ABC in Burbank on the assignment desk.
"I research stories and find breaking news," Vasquez said.  "I was actually on the scene when ABC was reporting about the big train wreck in Glendale.
"It's a big adrenaline rush when I do break the stories," Vasquez.  "It's a great satisfaction."
Vasquez got his start at ABC through an internship he got through Citrus.
"ABC was hosting a charity this one year, and I just started talking to the people. One of the people I talked to was ABC's television anchor Leo Stallworth, who got me the internship," Vasquez said.
"I'm only a temporary hire, but I will be leaving mid-June to go work full time at a small market as an assignment editor," Vasquez said.
