Congratulations to the Citrus College Women's basketball team who clinched first place in the Western State Conference Southern Division and will enter the playoffs soon.
Although their current record is enough to applaud alone, it is the history behind the team that makes their number one ranking even more exceptional.
The last time the women's basketball team finished first in conference, When Harry Met Sally redefined the 'romantic comedy,' Milli Vanilli hit the scene pre-lip synching scandal and Bush Sr. was in office.
Led by Coach Diane Looker, that 1989 squad finished the season atop the Foothill Conference.
This season Coach Ken Guttman has led the Lady Owls back to prominence.
In what has been an incredible turnaround, the women's squad is guaranteed to finish over .500, a feat that they have not accomplished in 11 years.
The team has gone undefeated thus far in a conference packed with talented squads looking to replace them atop the standings.
For this, Coach Guttman and the players deserve all praises for their grit and unwavering determination.
This year's team has exceeded all expectations and played together as a unit.
There are many players who have contributed to the success of the team and not just one superstar.
With women's teams at Citrus College finding little success in recent years, it is a testament to the women's basketball program for being able to succeed despite a losing tradition.
Coach Guttman should be applauded for his ability to recruit excellent high school ball players.
With a past full of losing seasons, the college does not recruit itself and coach must impress recruits with his vast basketball knowledge and positive attitude.
The women on the squad also maintain high grade point averages.
Last season the team averaged over a 3.0 gpa as a whole.
Balancing schoolwork with athletics can be a daunting task and the fact that these women can continue to excel on and off the court is commendable.
This magical season has not only brought pride to the Lady Owls, but to the athletic department and the whole Citrus community.
We encourage students to support their team and head out to their next home game today at 7:30 p.m.
