For the first time in 16 years, the Citrus College women's basketball team is the Western State Conference Southern Division Champions.
Their 67-52 victory over L.A. Valley on Saturday put the Owls over the top.
"That was a staggering feat for the team," said Dr. Ken Guttman, women's head coach. "They played hard as a team and won as a team."
Although the Owls have clinched the division title, they still have three conference games left to play.
Guttman says that they are more than ready to take them on.
When the L.A. Valley game was over the Owls knew they were number one, the team was excited but they knew that the journey was not over, Guttman said.
"The next step is to carry on with our undefeated record," he said. "After the game, the team's immediate response was 'Now let's go get Santa Monica.'"
The Owls will be facing off against the Corsairs at home today at 7:30 p.m. and they are looking to build on their 9-0 conference record.
Freshman Guard Jasmine Redmond who averages 10 points a game and leads the team in steals, said that the team is anxious for what the outcome of the season could turn out to be.
"We were willing to work for it from the beginning and right now our goal is to go all the way," she said. "We know we can take it all and we will continue to work as a team to get there."
The squad first took sole possession of the top spot Jan. 19 when Citrus squeaked out a 62-60 victory over College of the Canyons.
"That victory was meaningful because they were the defending champions. They didn't have a losing history. We did, yet we came out on top," Guttman said.
Since that defining game, the Owls have successfully faced off against Glendale Community College, (73-59), Bakersfield College, (80-60),
West L.A. College, (66-63), and just recently, L.A. Valley College.
Playing controlled offense and aggressive team defense has played a key role in the Owls' 2005 season.
"Since the first day the team met, they had the 'we are a team' mentality," Guttman said. "They have shared the ball and played intense defense. We have done everything as a team."
