The men's basketball squad was defeated during their most recent home game Jan. 12 against the Los Angeles Valley Monarchs. The final score was 69-78.
The Owls won Saturday against Santa Monica College. The final score in that contest was 67-66 in overtime.
The Owls' record is 11-10, and they are 1-3 in conference games. They are ranked sixth of seven teams in the Western State Conference-South division.
The Monarchs have record of 7-13, are 2-2 in conference games and are ranked fourth.
The College of the Canyons is in first place with a record of 10-7 and they are 3-0 in conference games.
The Monarchs dominated the entire game on Jan. 12.
With 18 points for the night, Monarch forward Mike Martin was the high scorer. He was also 4-4 from the three-point area.
Martin praised his team's performance against the Owls.
"We all came together as an actual team, not being selfish during the game," Martin said.
The Owls were never in the lead. The Monarchs contained the Citrus offense and dealt well with the defensive pressure.
"We took big shots when we had the opportunity and moved the ball very well," Martin said. "We reacted perfect to the Owls' zone defense. We cut to the basket and made the open shots."
Despite the Monarchs' 20 turnovers, they were still able to hold the Owls' highest average scorer, freshman center Mark Kelley, to a 14-point game with nine rebounds. Kelley, who normally averages 20 points a game, fouled out of the game during the last quarter.
The Owls started the game off flat and were unable to make free-throw shots throughout the contest.
Citrus freshman guard Jeremy Black said the squad needed higher intensity through the contest.
"We should have started out the game with more intensity and played harder on defense," Black said.
Citrus freshman guard Terance Clark, said that the team's inability to take advantage of turnovers and free throws was a setback.
"Honestly, it was the turnovers. We were unable to score off their turnover and missing our free-throws played a factor," Clark said.
The Owls have eight games left in the season. They will be playing away today against the first place College of the Canyons.
The Owls' next home game is Jan. 26 against Glendale College at 5:30 p.m. in the Gymnasium. Admission is free to students with current student government stickers on their identification cards.
