Riding a four-game winning streak, including a historic victory over Los Angeles Valley College, the Citrus College women's basketball team travels to Santa Clarita tonight where they will face off against College of the Canyons for sole possession of first place in the Western State Conference.
Both teams are currently undefeated in the WSC.
With a record of 12-7 in the season, the Cougars hold the eleventh spot in state. Not too far behind is Citrus, with a record of 14-6. The Owls are ranked 20th in the conference.
"The Cougars are a very tough team. They played against the toughest teams in our conference early in the season," said Head Coach Ken Guttman. "And for them to be the only undefeated team in the conference shows that they are a very talented team."
A victory over COC would ensure the Owls the top spot in the WSC; the Owls are determined to capture that spot, Guttman said.
"We have to look at the time we beat the number three team in the league," Guttman said. "If we play with the same intensity, and as the team with the number one defensive team, we will get that victory."
Freshman forward, Alexis Pope agrees.
"We have all been playing great as a team," Pope said. "Canyons is a tough team but we will pull it out, we know what we have to do to win."
Throughout the season Pope, has demonstrated unrelentingly why she was deserving of the Cerro Coso Tournament Championship's Most Valuable Player at the beginning of the season.
"I just like to go out, play my hardest and win, I know I have a lot more potential," Pope said.
In the Owls first match-up of the year against the Bakersfield College Renegades, Pope led the Owls with 22 points. Against West Los Angeles Valley College on Jan. 5, Pope was the top scorer with 21 points. Then in their Jan.12 game Pope was once again the night's leading scorer with 28 points.
Meanwhile, leading the Owls in defensive rebounds is freshman forward Nicole Cunnyngham, who had 17 rebounds in the Jan. 15 match-up against the Santa Monica College Corsairs.
Another noteworthy Owl is sophomore guard Desire Flores, with 13 points and 7 rebounds, one of which secured the Owls victory over the Corsairs.
With seven games left in the season, the Owl's will be looking to make history once more by taking the number one spot tonight at 7:30 p.m.
