Promises he made to educators during his 2003 recall campaign are now stirring up problems for Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.
During the 2003 campaign to recall then Gov. Gray Davis Schwarzenegger promised not to cut school funding or block scheduled increases to education.
But now that these scheduled increases are coming due of boosting education funding by hundreds of millions of dollars, the Governor seems to be backing out of his promise.
With the state's indebtedness now estimated at $8.1 billion is no where near an end and its credit maxed out, simple solutions to complex problems are no longer possible.
With the previous budget cuts in education, lawmakers and the governor were hoping to use that money to balance the budget without having to raise taxes, but school groups say they intend to hold the governor to his words that he promised not to touch educational funds.
Funding for education affects all campuses in California, especially the community colleges.
In Fall 2004 community college fees were raised from $18 to $26 and the cuts will continue to hurt schools for several more years.
The Governor must be held to his promise. To do otherwise is unfair as he is turning his back on students.
Schwarzenegger is the perfect example of politicians who say what the people want to hear in order to get elected and then change their minds once in office.
The education department has already suffered enough by losing $2 billion.
We as students have taken the hit and accepted it, but if fees keep rising it will only be a matter of time even community colleges will no longer be an option.
When asked what is important when picking a leader of our state, education is among the top three topics, cutting educational funds can be as dangerous as raising taxes.
Education is key to the world of tomorrow. We students are that world. What happens now in the state legislation will affect us forever after.
Once again the Governor needs to assure us that we will have a better future.
