With a win over College of the Canyons on October 6, Citrus improved to 11-3 in their overall record and 2-0 in the conference. Citrus is tied for first place in the Western Conference with Ventura.
"Right now we are tied for first place in our conference," said Citrus head coach Robert Fleming.
Our goal for this season is to compete for the conference title. Right now we are up there. We need to keep working hard to stay on top," Fleming said.
The Citrus College women's water polo overpowered College of the Canyons here at Citrus with a commanding score of 14-4.
College of the Canyons added another loss to their winless season.
Diana Stanich, COC head coach, commented on her team's performance.
"Right now, we have not won a game. We have zero wins and five losses," she said. "We need to score more goals. We need more from our offense."
The Cougars team's focus was to score at least five goals against the Citrus defense.
"Citrus is the team to beat in our conference." Stanich said. "The team played very well. Our goal was to get five goals. We got four, so we are happy."
COC players have the same attitude as their coach.
"We are so new. We only have two players from last season. Our main goal is to score more," said Kristi Wagoner, COC athlete.
COC driver Cyndi Meier credits Citrus set defense Lindsey Kimbell for the defensive showing against her team.
"Set defense number four ,Lindsey Kimbell, was pretty good," Meier said. "In the first two quarters, she really did a good job. She really made it impossible to get around her."
Citrus head coach Robert Fleming pointed out how inexperienced COC is compare to his team.
"They are really a young team [COC]. They have little experience on the team," Fleming said. " We have several athletes that have been playing a number of years on Citrus' team. So experience wise, we are quite a bit more a veteran team than they were. Having a veteran team is an advantage, because we know what we need to do."
Team captain Lindsey Kimbell had similar approach about COC performance.
"COC did not gave us to much trouble," Kimbell said. "We pretty much shut them down. There was nothing that they could really do"
This match was important to her and the team.
"It was very important especially when we are trying to go win the conference," Kimbell said. "Every game that we win is one step closer to getting us there"
Citrus won the Pasadena Bowl Tournament on Oct. 8 and 9. Citrus finished the tournament with a 3-1 record.
Citrus will be hosting the Citrus Tournament October 15 and 16. The home team is also scheduled to play Ventura on Oct. 20. Entrance is free with an ASCC sticker.
