For the Owls women's soccer team there are no expectations at all this season, no weight on their shoulders and far as they are concerned it's time to revamp and move forward.
Coach Tim Tracey is back after starting the men's soccer program in 1987. With two returnees and five walk-ons it is going to be tough to assemble a full squad in time, but he feels that he can make the best of this season.
"My goal is a two-year plan that will make Citrus a pool of local talent for women's soccer and enable our program to build up to a respectable level," Tracey said. "There is no reason why we can't be a dominant force in this league and area."
Tracey wants to emphasize an aggressive defense, discipline and strong conditioning in order to build the program to its potential.
Ashlee Moncier, 18, who just moved from Hawaii to Azusa, is trying out for the team and believes this is the best opportunity for a player to shine.
"I've been playing since I was four years old," she said. "I'm always dreaming of competing at the collegiate and professional stage. Anything is possible if we work hard and commit to teamwork - it's a must."
Moncier has the fire that Tracey desires in order to win. Since last year's team won only two games, she is hoping to change that.
"I'm ready to work hard," she said. "I'm ready to kick some butt. No team wants to lose."
Tracey is respected among soccer coaches in the area. He is a Cal Poly Pomona alumni, and has played in numerous semi-pro leagues. He grew up in Claremont and coached for Claremont High. Tracey came back to Citrus after feeling something he missed: his aspiration to finish what he started.
"I want to take Citrus women's soccer to another level - make this college an advocate for recruiting and let the women strive academically along with the sport," Tracey said.
The Owls' first game is at Cerritos College on Tuesday at 4 p.m. Tracey is looking to build his squad with up to 18 players. For students wanting to play for the team, the requirements are taking a minimum of 12 units; nine of those units must be academic. Practices are held on the soccer field Mon.-Thurs. at 4:30 p.m.
