College President Makes Good on Plans

Issue date: 8/25/04 Section: EDITORIALS
Superintendent/president of Citrus College Dr. Michael J. Viera recently completed his first year of service at Citrus College. Before the start of the 2003-04 school year, Viera outlined his goals to the faculty and staff. It is now time to issue a reportcard to him and to all the college employees.
Goal one -- ACCREDITATION:
Last year the entire campus was evaluated according to 10 standards created by the Accrediting Commission for Community Colleges.
In the final report, a visitation team of 12 distinguished educators included commendations to Citrus for its institutional integrity, educational programs, institutional effectiveness, student support and development services.
Once again, Citrus was awarded a full six-year accreditation.
Had Citrus not been accredited, it would not be able to collect funding from the state. It also would not be able to offer its students much needed financial aid.
Also, if a student obtains a degree or takes a course from a non-accredited institution, that student may find that some employers do not recognize the degree or thatcourse credits may not transfer to other institutions.
GRADE: A
Goal two -- FACILITIES BOND:
Measure G, a $121 million facilities bond on the March 2, 2004, ballot passed with 57.45 percent voter approval, barely exceeding the required 55 percent required approval rate.
With the funding provided by passage of the Measure G bonds, Citrus, the oldest community college in Los Angeles County, will be able to renovate existing buildings and construct new ones. The new math/science building, already well on its way, is scheduled to be completed by fall 2005.
GRADE: A
Goal three -- NEW FACULTY:
Citrus students beginning their educational careers this fall are not the only ones getting acquainted with the campus. The college has just added 18 full-time faculty members to its staff.
New faculty bring new energy and new ideas to the college life.
GRADE: A
Goal four--APPLYING FOR FEDERAL GRANTS:
