Capcom takes us back to the streets

Capcom has once again released another iteration of its legendary Street Fighter series. While not necessarily a sequel, it can be said that Super Street Fighter IV is an update to the critically acclaimed Street Fighter IV.

However, can 10 new characters and a refurbished online play possibly be worth slapping down $40 for an update? That'd be an affirmative.

Super Street Fighter IV features a variety of game modes that carry over from Street Fighter IV along with some new additions. The Arcade mode now features mini games that Street Fight IV didn't have before. These mini games include breaking a car with your fighting techniques and smashing barrels.

Super Street Fighter IV doesn't have much in the story department. Essentially all the plot boils down to is that there's an international tournament going on being hosted by the S.I.N., a weapons manufacturer.

That being said, the weak story can be forgiven due to the fact that Super Street Fighter IV was designed with being in an actual arcade in mind. As such the fights can get a bit daunting on difficulties above Easy even for veteran Street Fighter players.

For those who are jumping into Street Fighter for the first time there is a Challenge mode that features challenges based around the moves and combos for the 35 characters in the game.

There's also a Training mode for you to practice the moves and combos that you learned in Challenge mode on a computer controlled dummy.

The online aspect has gone under a major re-haul compared to Street Fighter IV. While Tournament mode was taken out of Super Street Fighter IV, two new online modes have been added to take its play: Team Battle, Replay and Endless Battle.

In Endless Battle and Team Battle you can set up parties of up to eight players that rotate fighting the winner of each match.

Replay mode allows you to watch matches that have been recorded while playing online.

Having played a decent amount of matches I very rarely encountered any lag while playing online. However, that does depend both on your internet connection and the internet connection of everyone in your party. Online experiences may vary.

Super Street Fighter IV was released for the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 on April 27, 2010. The game retails at $39.99 and has the Teen ESRB.
